Our Story
Commitment & Dedication
The County Women’s League is a strictly volunteer organization established more than 50 years ago by a group of women in Greene County. It was originally adopted on January 1, 1970.
The league began when one of the founders was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was overwhelmed by the expenses associated with her treatment. Although she had insurance, she was concerned about those with no or limited coverage.
Gathering a few friends, she formed The Greene County Women’s League with a mission to assist all individuals in Greene County diagnosed with cancer. This founders were Fran Principe and Lillian Becker.
The organization began with 10 members and has grown to over 100. The need in Greene County has increased significantly over the years, and we now assist more than 70 individuals in the county, receiving calls daily from people seeking our help. We provide aid to those diagnosed with cancer by covering medical expenses not covered by their insurance, up to $5,000 per patient. This aid includes costs for medication, prosthetics, doctor visits, and hospital bills.
Our funds are raised through organized fundraising events and the generosity of individuals and local businesses. We do not receive support from state or federal government sources, and none of our members receive compensation for their hard work and dedication.
Our members are committed to supporting cancer patients in Greene County, and we will continue our efforts until we can no longer do so. At that point, we will pass on this commitment to the next generation, ensuring that it endures until cancer is eradicated.
